<image:title>Stories - Confident Communication: How Impromptu Interview Empowered Psychology Capstone Students - Hear from Gwenn Painter ‘25</image:title>
<image:caption>What inspired you to organize the Impromptu Interview event, and what goals did you hope students would achieve by participating? “I was honestly inspired by our past Impromptu Interview events our office has hosted in the past! Before working here, I had heard of these events before but had never attended, leading me to not really know what these events entailed. After speaking with Hannah Su Hepler, we came up with the great idea of hosting an Impromptu Interview event with my Psychology Capstone class. We hoped that these students would benefit from expanding their interviewing skills and getting a chance to talk to real employers from the area! Events like these open the door to opportunity for students who want to expand their network.” As the event organizer, how did your own confidence and professional skills grow during the planning and implementation of this event? “Planning this event pushed me out of my comfort zone (in a good way!) and allowed me to gain better personal and professional connections. Not only did I network and connect with all of the employers, but by setting up this event for my classmates, I was able to talk to and get to know them better than I had before! It was really nice getting to make friendships and connections with my classmates, as we were all nervous together. Everyone involved — including our office, my classmates, and the employers — was all so lovely to work with, and made the whole experience feel so fulfilling.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Evening Bite and Career Insights with Allegheny Health Network - What goals did you hope to achieve during Evening Bites and Career Insights? “I hoped this event would allow Pre-Health students to get a head start on professional development early in the school year to set themselves up for confidence and success in any opportunities that may arise throughout their academic endeavors.”</image:title>
<image:caption>How do you think events like this help students interested in healthcare prepare for the challenges of applying to professional programs or future careers? “This experience was an incredible opportunity from several different perspectives. Nicholas Joseph, who is the recruiter from AHN, offered students the opportunity to explore paid healthcare positions and shadowing opportunities for those hoping to get their foot in the door with one of Pittsburgh's largest employers. Having Hannah and Grace from Career Development at the event to talk about their services (resume assistance, mock interviews) on campus, hopefully gave students more confidence going into professional events. Professor Li, who is a professor from the Chatham Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program, was also at our event. She provided a first-hand look into the importance of having a well-rounded professional profile to excel in graduate-level programs and beyond.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Evening Bite and Career Insights with Allegheny Health Network</image:title>
<image:caption>What inspired AHN to partner with the Pre-PA Club for this workshop, and what impact did you hope to have on students? “AHN's partnership with the Pre-PA Club stems from a desire to cultivate strong relationships and guide the next generation of healthcare providers. We hope to provide students with the tools and insights necessary to succeed in their pursuit of healthcare careers.” From your perspective, why are resume and interview skills particularly important for students interested in healthcare careers? “Resume and interview skills are crucial for students in healthcare because they provide a platform to showcase their passion, experience, and potential. The ability to effectively communicate their qualifications and enthusiasm allows them to stand out and secure valuable opportunities in a competitive field. More interviews and applications lead to more opportunities.” What key advice or recurring themes did you emphasize during the workshop that you believe students need to hear most? “The overarching theme was that every experience, regardless of its perceived relevance, holds value and can be translated into a strength. For example, experience as a waiter or waitress demonstrates the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and handle customer interactions effectively.”</image:caption>

A brief, composed acknowledgment signals thoughtfulness: “That’s a great question—let me take a second to think through my response.” This shows poise and allows you to gather your thoughts, rather than rushing into an incomplete or inaccurate answer, which is more likely to diminish your reputation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you don’t have the answer, use the moment to highlight your problem-solving process and willingness to learn: “I don’t know the exact answer, but here’s how I would approach finding it.” “I haven’t encountered that before, but I’d be eager to learn and apply that knowledge.” This approach shifts the focus from the gap in your knowledge to your adaptability and growth mindset, qualities employers value.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Spencer Jenkins Shares His Experience as the Student Assistant for Design in Career Development</image:title>
<image:caption>What were your initial impressions, and how have they changed? “I started working at career development the summer of my sophomore year. At first, I was overwhelmed with all the things I had to do. Starting a new job is always hard for me, but as time went on, I got more comfortable with the tasks I needed to do, interacting with students and employers, and helping people with any questions they have.” What project or experience are you most proud of? “This year I was tasked with creating blind box pins that represented the academic success departments. This project took a long time, and I had to do some troubleshooting with the design and creating blind box envelopes. But after seeing how excited people were, it made all my effort worth it.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Hannah Fischer Shares Her Journey as the Student Assistant for Employer Engagement in Career Development</image:title>
<image:caption>What were your initial impressions, and how have they changed? “My initial impressions of the office was that all of the people who worked there were very welcoming, and that they all genuinely care. Luckily, this impression has not changed and if anything, it has gotten stronger over the years I’ve worked here.” What project or experience are you most proud of? “I am most proud of collaborating with a past coworker, Jackie Clark, on creating an event for the office called Impromptu Interview. After being tasked with researching how to increase employer engagement on campus, we came up with the idea of bringing employers to campus to help students get hands-on experience with interviewing. We have since hosted a second Impromptu Interview, and are in the process of planning another. I am happy to leave a significant contribution behind.” What is something you learned from working at Career Development? “Working at Career Development has taught me the importance of collaboration, and networking both personally and professionally. My role here has given me the skills to communicate with others in professional ways, while simultaneously being able to show my authentic personality.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Mercy Nyoni Reflects on Her Experience as a Graduate Associate in the Office of Career Development</image:title>
<image:caption>What were your initial impressions of the Career Development Office? “My initial impressions of the office was that it had a lot of friendly and accommodating individuals. Someone's background did not matter, the supervisors made sure that all student employees were treated with respect. My initial impressions did not change.“ What project or experience are you most proud of? “I am proud of the improvements that I made to the Internship Program. One of the things was forming and maintaining effective communication between the Internship Site Supervisors and the Office of Career Development. This increased the rate at which Internship Site Supervisors responded and completed the midterm and final evaluations. What is something you learned from working at career development? “I learned that if you need good and tangible results you must trust your team. I'm sure it was never easy for the office supervisors to put that kind of trust in students, but that trust is what made the office more resilient. Trusting your team/subordinates makes them feel confident in doing their tasks thereby improving the end result.” How will your time here impact your future endeavors and lead you closer to your professional or personal goals? “My role in the office helped me to be more confident in myself, this means I can speak in front of an audience without feeling too nervous because I have been given the opportunity to be able to take charge. I feel this is a good skill because all jobs need someone who can effectively communicate. This role sharpened my research, analytical and presentation skills which I think are very useful in the business field.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Welcoming Grace Conde, Assistant Director of Experiential Learning, to Career Development</image:title>
<image:caption>Question 1: How would you describe your role to students, and what do you feel is most important for students to know about you and your role? “I think my role as the Assistant Director of Experiential Learning is to work with students to identify internships that most closely relate to their major or future intended area of study. Then, I help them identify experiential opportunities where they can gain real-world applicable skills and bring that experience back into their studies at Chatham. Ultimately, the goal is to help prepare them for future careers in areas they're passionate about.” “Another big part of my job is working to bring off-campus employers and organizations to the Chatham community. For example, we have connections with organizations like Literacy Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, and the Aviary. We do this through events like Workforce Wednesday and other events throughout the year. These are great opportunities for students to come meet employers. It's important for students to know that we have these connections, and they can definitely use our office to connect with employers. Additionally, they can use our services to prepare their resumes and cover letters for these experiences.” Question 2: What are you most looking forward to in this office? “I'm most looking forward to having my student appointments. A big part of why I enjoy this job so much is that it really focuses on the developmental aspect of a student's career and their professional identity. For me, getting to work with students and having them, sometimes for the first time, really develop and identify what a professional identity means to them is really important, and I really enjoy the one-on-one aspect of getting to know and support students individually.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - How Working at Career Development has Helped Our Career Readiness</image:title>
<image:caption>Spencer Jenkins: Developing Confidence and Office Skills For Spencer Jenkins, Career Development has been instrumental in building his self-confidence and awareness in the job search process. Working in the office has provided him with an insider’s view on what it takes to find and secure meaningful job opportunities, making him feel more prepared as he looks toward the future. Spencer has also grown in the day-to-day skills that come with working in a professional environment. "I've learned how to communicate my needs clearly and effectively and how to approach my supervisors with questions," he explains. This experience has not only boosted his confidence but also equipped him with essential skills he’ll carry into any future role. "Career Development taught me how to be both proactive and self-sufficient," Spencer adds, "and I know these skills will serve me well in any future office setting." Olivia Harris: Confidence Building and Gaining Outreach Experience Working in Career Development keeps me closely connected to the application process and researching internships. My career path has largely been shaped by this process, and staying immersed in it as a student has helped me feel less intimidated by writing cover letters, editing my resume, completing interviews, and engaging in conversations with my supervisor. My position has also been tailored to my skills and experiences. When I received my first federal internship, I initially lacked experience working directly with constituents. However, my work in the Office of Career Development—answering student questions and creating student-facing content and events—had already helped me develop strong outreach skills. While constituent work varies with each experience, every instance of answering questions and providing guidance prepared me for the responsibilities I now handle in my internship.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Confident Voices: How Impromptu Interview and Chatham Honors Students Impressed Employers - Last year on November 14th 2023, Career Development Student Assistants Jackie Clark and Hannah Fischer created a new event called Impromptu Interview. This goal of this event was to humanize the interview process and create a comfortable environment where students could practice their interview skills with Chatham faculty or local Pittsburgh employers. Impromptu Interview had several employers come to campus and helped students gain experience interviewing with professionals. Due to last year's event's success and positive feedback, Hannah knew she wanted to host this event again. This year Hannah took a little bit of a different spin on the event and specifically partnered with Chatham Honors Program. Many of the students in the honors program are pursuing humanities-focused majors, which helped decide which employers to invite to Impromptu Interview. This year the office had the privilege of welcoming Terra Teets and Lisa Morse with Literacy Pittsburgh, and Erin Pace with Artists Image Resource (AIR) to campus! It was a pleasure having them and they helped make the event a huge success. Because of their commitment and dedication to partnering with Career Development, students were able to practice their interview skills, build professional networks, and receive critical feedback on responses to interview questions. Hannah received wonderful feedback from the employers that attended and they were very impressed with the level of professionalism and skill that the honors students exhibited. Employers pointed out the student’s confidence, their diverse interests, and the fact that they spoke from the heart. One employer specifically stated that the students “all seemed to have strong interviewing skills. My colleague and I agreed that the students we talked to seemed to be more confident interviewees than some long-time professionals in our field.” This comment truly sums up the level of skill Chatham students possess and highlights their abilities. Employers also advised students to be themselves, to not undersell their accomplishments, and to not be afraid to reach out!</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - How I Prepared for My First “High Stakes” Interviews and Tips I Learned Post-Interview - Defining High-Stakes Interviews:</image:title>
<image:caption>These were interviews for internships and jobs that represented dream positions for me—roles with ideal responsibilities, hours, and alignment with my career goals. The pressure came not just from the competitive nature of these positions, but from how much I personally wanted to secure them. General Tips for Any Interview: Be prepared to explain your answers in depth. A common follow-up question I encountered was: “What was the impact or outcome of your actions?” It’s essential to not only discuss what you’ve achieved but also articulate the specific results or benefits your efforts brought to a team, project, or organization. Ask insightful questions about the position, company, and your role within it. This shows genuine interest and can make you stand out. After one of my interviews, a hiring manager highlighted that, in addition to my resume and cover letter, my personalized questions and enthusiasm for the company made me memorable. Here are a few of the questions I was complimented on: - "Where have previous interns gone after completing this internship?" This shows that you’re thinking long-term and want to understand the potential career trajectory the internship can offer. - "What are some notable successes of past interns within this office?" This demonstrates an interest in learning from the organization's history and highlights your desire to succeed. - "What is the office dress code?" This is a practical question, but it also conveys your intent to fit in and understand the company culture. - “How many hours are interns expected to work per week?" Asking about work expectations shows you’re ready to manage your time and commitments responsibly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How would you describe your internship experience? I feel like it was fun and flexible…I got to watch what Hayden did with the students and I got to work alongside a nurse. [Initially] I thought I would be doing more hands-on care, but for…this internship it was more of working behind the scenes trying to figure our my [yoga] event. I also got to make emergency contraceptive bags and…pregnancy test kit bags. What are some skills that you learned during your internship or were able to practice that you believe will be an asset to your future career? Overall communication was the biggest one with Hayden, the nurse and the other student workers. After that, time management…just knowing I have deadlines for things. [The last skill is] openness about how I’m feeling… and just having the ability to not totally dismiss my outside life. I think for a long time, I was scared that no place of work would really let me do that. Describe your relationship with your site supervisor. I love Hayden because we talked a lot about nursing things and our experiences in nursing school. And we were really open about [how it is for her] being a non-bedside nurse. [Hayden has a more] flexible chill job being at a university. [The relationship was] really nice, very open and we always got what we needed to get done and she’s great. Getting to see what [Hayden] does and knowing that that’s and knowing that that’s an option was really cool.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Spring 2024 & Summer 2024 Internship Spotlight</image:title>
<image:caption>How would you describe your internship experience? I would describe my internship experience as being transformative and enlightening. I was able to work directly with members during my internship and their stories have helped to reshape my understanding of mental illness and how people are affected because of it. What was your favorite part of your internship? My favorite part of my internship was watching how members of Oasis House grew during my time there. It was always nice to see how they became more comfortable around me and trusted me more the more we got to know each other. Building that bond with people and being able to be a resource for them in their journey was by far the most impactful part of my internship. Is there any advice you’d like to give to students who have yet to begin the internship process? I would say to start communicating with your academic advisor, site supervisor, and Career Development early on in the Internship Process. That way you can have people to support you throughout your internship and someone to answer questions when they come up. This also helped to keep me organized in the sense that everyone was on the same page.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - From Career Development Coordinator to Director - On that sort of same note, can you tell me about your journey within Chatham that led to this role?</image:title>
<image:caption>Whenever I originally got hired on as the Coordinator, it was a new role intended to help organize and support the three other professional staff members and oversee student employees. So I did a lot of everything. I got exposure to the Internship Program, got exposure to how to best interact with employers from the former Associate Director of Employer Relations, Dr. Lesli Somerset Talley, and then also began taking student appointments. I also took an interest in doing more with the student employees, like supervision. I talked about my interests in doing more with student employees with Kate Sheridan, the former Director of Career Development, and that's how I got more involved in shaping what the Student Assistant role looked like within the office and implementing a more structured supervision. Being a Coordinator allowed me to learn a lot of a different aspects of the office. Whenever I got promoted to the Associate Director of Student Support and Programming, that moved me away from the more generalist tasks and doing more specialized work. In that role I was working with other departments on campus more closely, seeing how we could collaborate with all things under career development, and also took more ownership of student employee processes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - From Career Development Coordinator to Director - In what ways do you tend to foster a culture of lifelong learning and professional development among our students?</image:title>
<image:caption>Instead of just one big way to foster lifelong learning I like espouse those ideas many different small ways. For example, within one on one appointments with students, starting to plant the idea or working to expand their thinking from“I have this degree and I wanna go for this job.” Throughout different interactions and events with students, it’s important to expand a student’s scope of career. Having them understand that just because they want to go on to do something really specific does not mean they can't find fulfillment in more varied fields. I also feel like fostering a culture of lifelong learning and professional development comes with having a further understanding and pulling in a Life Design framework. That framework is what the office grounds itself in. If you don't feel personally fulfilled by your job, it doesn't mean you're incapable of performing it well. Instead of drawing all your passion from one place, ask yourself: What are the things that excite me outside of paid employment? How can I invest time, energy and attention in cultivating passion in that space? Having a career is just one aspect of what you're gonna be doing lifelong. Being able to make sure to balance and create boundaries at work is important not only for your professional identity but your identity as a growing person.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Chatham Students are Leaving a Lasting Impression in Their Internship Sites</image:title>
<image:caption>The survey results indicate that 93% of the respondents are open to hosting another university intern from Chatham in the future. Only five respondents declined to host another intern, with one citing their proximity to retirement and another mentioning the need for better communication and involvement from Chatham. These results are encouraging for Chatham's Internship Program, as they suggest host organizations have had positive experiences with the interns and the program. This willingness to continue participating in the program is a strong endorsement of Chatham's ability to provide high-quality internship opportunities to its students, which can further enhance its reputation and relationships with industry partners. Direct Quotes: Hardworking and academically prepared I feel this program was done exceptionally well. Communication was always there and there is no guessing involved.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Meaningful Internship Experiences at Transitional Options - How did you find out about partnering with Chatham University?</image:title>
<image:caption>“I learned about working with Chatham University from Matthew Spangler who worked in the Career Development Office and got connected to opportunities through her. We have been partnering with Chatham since about 2018.” What was your relationship with your interns like? “I do initial onboarding with interns, I get to meet them first. After they are hired I pass them on to the management team, but I stay updated on their experience. I handle interviewing, but it’s more of an open discussion of their long-term goals. We have opportunities out there for a lot of different backgrounds and fields so it’s really about finding what students want to prioritize and learn during their internship.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Meaningful Internship Experiences at Transitional Options - What advice do you have for someone that does not know what to look for in an internship/site? “It is important to do initial research. Do a deeper dive into social media and into the sites and roles that are posted. Never be afraid to ask to do more or be more and if you don't think the internship is what you expected don’t be afraid to speak up. ”</image:title>
<image:caption>What is something that you would like for people to know about your internship opportunities or organization in general? “We offer paid internship opportunities and I think that with that it allows there to be more hands-on experience. It is a resume builder and real job, since you are doing the same thing employees do because college students already have the experience needed for the job. Because of this, 60-70% of the time, students stay longer than their internship. It puts them on a trajectory for employment in the future. Once people feel comfortable with their roles, they start to invite their friends, so it becomes a close community of staff.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Chatham Students are Suited for Success - Picture: Olivia Harris (wearing a light purple blazer) and the volunteers from Dress for Success Pittsburgh</image:title>
<image:caption>On Wednesday, March 27th Dress for Success Pittsburgh arrived at Chatham with a free boutique of professional clothing. Students rushed to the Welker Room in James Laughlin Music Hall to get suited for success. Olivia Harris, the Student Assistant for Student Outreach at the Career Development Office, was the one who spearheaded this impactful event. Olivia's passion for supporting her peers and her commitment to fostering a thriving community at Chatham have been instrumental in bringing the Suited for Success event to fruition. Through her efforts, she has not only planned but also executed this impactful event, leaving Chatham students feeling more confident and adding professional clothing to their wardrobes. Suited for Success could not have happened without a collaboration with Dress for Success Pittsburgh. This event’s goal was to equip students with free professional attire to empower them to present themselves confidently in interviews, internships, and other career-related pursuits. Suited for Success had over 40 Chatham students take away free professional clothing. The success of Suited for Success wouldn't be possible without the invaluable partnership of Dress for Success Pittsburgh and its dedicated volunteers. Their unwavering support and generosity have played a pivotal role in making this event a reality. By providing access to quality professional clothing, they have helped remove barriers that often hinder students from reaching their full potential. The impact of Suited for Success extends far beyond professional clothing. It's about instilling students with a sense of confidence, authenticity, and empowerment as they navigate their professional journeys. By equipping them with the tools they need to make a positive impression, Suited for Success helped open doors to opportunities that may have otherwise seemed out of reach.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How did you find out about partnering with Chatham University? I found out about partnering with Chatham because our campus is very close to Shady Side Academy’s campus. Because the locations are so close to one another, I decided to reach out to the Career Development Office to ask about basic recruiting information. In partnering with the Office, I was “able to connect with great candidates.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - The Internship Search: Insights from Ian Hare</image:title>
<image:caption>What were a couple of goals you created that helped you search for internships / narrow your search? To help narrow my search for an internship that was required of me for my program was to think of an office I wanted to gain experience in. As a upcoming higher education professional, I understand it is important to assist students in multiple settings. For me, I always had my own rank of functional areas that I have the most interest in. Since I love working with students on the academic side of college, I felt as though a position in Career Services would be a great experience for me before graduating. Other goals of mine were to narrow down where I will be living, which helped me in my search also. Where did you look for internships? What resource do you feel like was most helpful to you? From what I recall, I do not necessarily remember doing much of a general search in the Pittsburgh area for an internship. What helped me reach out to all of these universities was the network I created. I was surrounded around professionals at my campus an hour from Pittsburgh, but after talking with the director of Career Services at Slippery Rock University, I was given a connection to Chatham. This conversation was impactful, so I made sure to express my passion and interest within my desired functional area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Major: International Studies with an International Certificate in Europe Year: Senior Internship Site: City of Pittsburgh Mayor’s Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs Pronouns: she/her/hers What did a typical day at your internship look like? Every day was different, but my responsibilities were writing briefings for the mayor for events he was invited to and attending delegations from different countries to hear about refugee crises in Europe. What was your favorite part of the internship? I really liked seeing the impact that a city government could have on constituents and how different departments could work together to achieve a goal. Do you feel that your internship has helped you obtain a better understanding of future jobs/internships? Yes! I gained knowledge about how city government works, and I want to work in city government in the future. I also gained networking opportunities through the office and agencies I’m interested in. What advice do you have for someone who does not know what to look for in an internship/site? Keep trying to find something that fits for you! It’s really important to learn about the company culture because that shows what you’ll get out of the internship. I felt that my bosses respected my ideas and cared about my learning. Also, apply to opportunities even if you think it’s a reach or you’re not qualified. This specific position applied to a graduate position, but I ended up getting it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stephanie Rios Major: Immersive Media Year: Sophomore Internship Site: Tin Drum Pronouns: she/her/hers What did a typical day at your internship look like? I was on a design team where we were making a prototype of a case to transport headsets. There was research involved, as well as 3D printing and supervisor meetings to discuss ideas and logistics. What was your favorite part of the internship? I loved the atmosphere of the company itself. It was very laid back, and I felt like part of the company. Do you feel that your internship has helped you obtain a better understanding of future jobs/internships? Yes. Seeing my major in a professional sense outside of Chatham was interesting to me, as was seeing other people in my major and their potential with their degrees. What advice do you have for someone who does not know what to look for in an internship/site? Find ways to make connections. Ask around, ask your professors, and people related to the field. My friend got me this internship through someone they met. We created the connection from there. Connections like this may not be what you expect.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Mental Health Care in Three Types of Professions - Dr. Williams-Hatala described her professional journey as “ non-linear”. As an undergraduate, she studied Anthropology and Archaeology at Grinnell College in Iowa. Afterwards, she applied to various law school until she realized that she wanted to be a scientist. When asked about her change of direction, she explained that it was an activity that she liked. “I like archaeology, early technologies, and anatomy. I realize that I’m a fairly happy person and can be happy doing a variety of things,” she said. With this goal in mind, she obtained her Master’s of Arts in Anthropology, and a Master’s of Science and PHD in Hominid Paleobiology at George Washington University in Washington D.C. During this time, she discussed the stresses that she underwent. “I was working 50 hours/week my first year of gradate school and sleeping literally every other night to fit it all in”, she said. Dr. Williams-Hatala also shared that she was not funded for her academic pursuits, which strained the money to obtain food. Despite the stresses, she considered it a joyful because it was exciting and she was eager to fulfill her goals. To manage her stress then and now, she limits media or conversations that are negative. For example, she avoids reading the news and instead reads topics about culture or science. Also, she emphasized for students to pursue skills or activities that will manage their stress. “Stress will always be present,” she said, “and you have to find the skills manage you to function through it.” For instance, Dr. Williams-Hatala takes time to read science fiction, zombie, and apocalypse novels or novels about community like Deacon King Kong. She also takes CBD gummies to relax when needed. Other advice she shared for students was to say no to requests when need and to ask for a friend’s assistance during difficult times.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - Mental Health Care in Three Types of Professions - At first, Dr. Sarteschi did not have an intention to get involved in criminology or human behavior. She attended community college to study psychology, but she changed her focus to social work when meeting psychology professors with social work experience. So, she transferred to the University of Pittsburgh where she obtained her PhD in Social Work. During this time, she took internships that exposed the intersection between community mental health and the criminal justice system. “My first internship was at the Community Mental Health and Psychiatric Hospital in Bloomfield,” she explained, “and I had to learn skills without assistance when managing with individuals who were intoxicated or delusional”. She also procured an internship in which she visited people’s home during crises calls. Over time, this developed her desire to help individuals with mental illness, especially those with severe mental illness and involved in the criminal justice system. During her graduate year, she was involved in research internships about therapy and the intersection between the criminal justice system and mental illness. Due to this desire to bridge the gap of knowledge between mental health and the criminal justice system, she introduced the idea of Forensic Social Work in the Social Work department. “This is an attempt to address the important issues but also enhance the job prospects of graduates as they enter the workforce,” she explained. Later on in her professional journey, she focused her research extremist groups and extreme violent crime. She described the stresses that occur in her work. For example, she said that her focus on certain extremist groups can make her a target of criticism. So, she has to be aware of her personal safety. As a researcher, there seems to be a constant stress.“You have to keep publishing working consistently to keep your job. So, it can feel like you have homework all the time,” said Dr. Sarteschi. However, there are times when things become overwhelming. In those scenarios, Dr. Sarteschi emphasized the importance of time management. “Those who study this area have a built-in tolerance to those topics,” she said, “but you must have a balance.” She said, for example, that there should be scheduled breaks to exercise, watch tv, or other hobbies. It also can extend into the basic necessities like getting quality sleep and eating a balanced diet regularly. Other tips Dr. Sarteschi suggested minimizing exposure to distressing topics. It not only helps to set boundaries between her work but also reduce the likelihood of desensitization to the world. A final piece of advice Dr. Sarteschi offered was finding a support system. “I had dreams about one case, ”she explained, “and I realized that it was too much.” Having the presence of her family and friends was helpful,” she added. Other options that she suggested were mental health hotlines, counseling centers, peer support groups, or even academic advisors. “Your well-being is the highest priority, and the willingness to reach out for helps is an essential step towards maintaining positive mental health,” she shared.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - Mental Health Care in Three Types of Professions - From creating her own fake broadcast channel as a child to editor of her high school’s year book, Professor Sara Bauknecht’s passion for media was evident. Pursuing her B.A. in Communication Arts, with minors in Creative Writing & Theater, from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, she obtained internships with the Montell Williams Show, Conde Nast, and she worked in publsihing for the Penguin Group (Viking Press) and CVS. These experiences developed her interest in the news, which contributed to her decision of working with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 2009 to 2022. During her time there, she was an online editor, social media content creator, a lifestyle editor, and a dance writer to connect with her roots to dance. “I really enjoyed telling the stories of the people of Pittsburgh in a multiplatform way”, shared Professor Bauknecht. Also, she obtained her M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication at Point Park University. Currently, she is working with her business partner on a strategic consultation work to share stories about non-profits and small organizations in the Pittsburgh community. Professor Bauknect shared the struggles that herself and other journalist endured in media. She described the 24/7 work with the multiple deadlines she needed to complete, which required working from 9 AM to 5 PM— or until 2 AM. The constant changing of the schedule impacts mental and physical health since it causes changes to eating, sleeping, and exercise patterns. Professor Bauknecht also described the extreme competition in this industry, and it becomes difficult to not conflate one’s personal identity to their professional identity. Consequently, other who work in media may not respect personal boundaries like when someone is having a tough day. Other stressors were grief and depression from certain stories you come into contact with and exposure in the public eye can lead to criticism or cruelty. To maintain her boundaries between her personal and professional life, Professor Bauknecht advocates for herself, which she encouraged students to do as well. “You must recognize personal and professional boundaries and speak up when you need time off because you need your physical and mental health,” she shared. “If you don’t have that, then it is okay that it [this working environment] is not working for you.” Professor Bauknecht also shared that distancing one’s self from work helps to manage the overwhelming feelings especially from new’s topics. “I have heard from people that they simply take a shower to rid the day,” said Bauknecht, “or using the five senses to be mindful and do yoga.” Regarding outside commentary, she said to avoid internalizing the harsh ones and focus or learn from the criticisms to improve her writing. Another piece of advice for students was finding a mentor because they can be a sounding board when trying to navigate your options during a difficult time. Her final thoughts about mental health strategies re-emphasize the idea of self-advocation. “If you are not supporting yourself, then it is difficult to support yourself or within a community,” she said.</image:title>

<image:caption>Practicing mindfulness meditation- Anxiety centers around future deadlines in our academic, professional, and personal life. By learning how to be present in one’s environment, students can mitigate their stress. Spending time outside/ Playing games- Take a break from studying or an assignment by walking or sitting down in a park can allow you to recharge to tackle your tasks. You could also find intramural sports or campus club activities like Chess Club or Tabletop Gaming Club to relax as well. Creating a routine- Provide yourself with a sense of structure to help you find times for work and wellness. For example, you could incorporate running after your last class of the day or having a movie night after a big exam.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Major: English Year: Sophomore Internship Site: Pittsburgh Media Project Pronouns: she/her/hers What did a typical day at your internship look like? I would get into the office around 9, and I could cover what I wanted to cover like the Three Rivers Art Festival and the August Wilson Center. I would be out in the community and share different stories. In generaI, I would write the stories, receive edits from my supervisors, and apply the edits. What was your favorite part of the internship? One thing that I found through journalism is that I wanted to highlight experiences beyond myself. With the article I wrote about the August Wilson Center, I saw the art and talked with the people about what the art meant to them. Do you feel that this internship has helped you obtain a better understanding of your future career or job interests? Yes, I want to be a journalist 100% after seeing and working with the other journalists out in the field. I thought I wanted to do scientific writing, but I liked journalism through this experience. What advice do you have for someone that does not know what to look for in an internship/site? If you have a passion like art/writing/ speaking, and try to find something that aligns with that. <image:title>Stories - Summer 2023 Internship Spotlights - Vania Y. Ramirez Romo</image:title>
<image:caption>Major: Cellular Molecular Biology Year: Junior Internship Site: NeuBase Pronouns: she/her/hers What did a typical day at your internship look like? I get there at 9 am and get coffee/ tea and sit with my supervisor to talk about the plan of the day. Around 11, I prepared my materials for my experiment. Then, at 12 pm, they [the researchers] would get lunch, and two days a week lunch was provided by the company. I would spend the rest of the day journaling about what I accomplished before leaving. What was your favorite part of the internship? My favorite part was working in the lab because I have done similar things for my independent study at Chatham. Being able to talk to my co-workers normally was nice too, and journal presentations where we read and analyzed scientific articles was helpful for future classes I will take. Reading them in classes versus the lab was different because in class we saw how things are, but in the lab I learned what needed to be improved. Do you feel that this internship has helped you obtain a better understanding of your future career or job interests? I was able to talk with a lot of co-workers, and I saw that everyone didn’t have an PhD that I thought they would have. Originally, I wanted to go to medical school, but they helped me with my options and interest in research. What advice do you have for someone that does not know what to look for in an internship/site? You should look at the work environment (ie. is it warm and inviting), and find something that you truly enjoy. With the people I was with in the lab, they made it seem less like a 9-5, and more like ‘Oh, I am just going to the lab and having fun.’</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Summer 2023 Internship Spotlights - Marisa Ostrosky</image:title>
<image:caption>Major: Environmental Science Year: Senior Internship Site: Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh Pronouns: she/her/hers What did a typical day at your internship look like? I would get assigned a cleaning area for morning feedings. There are scheduled meetings every day, which could mean at least 5x a day for some animals. For example, it can take every few minutes to hours to feed rabbits, possums, and birds. What was your favorite part of the internship? My favorite part of the internship was coming into contact with so many animals and the chance to see medical procedures and exams the staff would perform. For example, I saw the medicine and had the chance to calculate the dosage for mammals or fluids for birds. Do you feel that this internship has helped you obtain a better understanding of your future career or job interests? Definitely. I was very hands on with the animals and learned the rules within the species’ ecosystems. Also, I could explore multiple fields like animal care, veterinary care with medicine, animal conservation, and wildlife biology. What advice do you have for someone that does not know what to look for in an internship/site? On LinkedIn and Handshake, look at the job descriptions and filter it down to your specific field and apply to many. If you get an interview with a job site, look into their mission statement and see if it reflects you and see which company you liked talking with the most.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - From Student Assistant to Prepared Professionals - Describe yourself.</image:title>
<image:caption>My pronouns are she/her/hers, and I am in the MS Counseling Psychology program. My future goal is to become a psychologist and would love to continue treating obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as expanding my specializations in other areas of the field of psychology. I absolutely love learning and feel that there is so much more for me to explore, so hopefully going for a doctorate is somewhere in my future as well. How did you discover this job position? Ironically, I found this position on Handshake, scheduled an appointment (also on Handshake!) to review my resume, and then interviewed shortly after. I started looking for on-campus jobs that would also help me develop transferable skills and learning about career counseling seemed like a perfect fit. How long have you worked at this job position, and what were your main tasks? I started working in Career Development way back when we were still in the library’s basement! I believe it’s been about 4 years, and I have truly enjoyed every minute. For the first few years, I was a student assistant and prioritized emails, as well as Handshake tasks such as approvals, adding events, and helping schedule appointments. Eventually, I started taking resume and cover letter reviews and internship appointments too. Once I started grad school, I became a GA for the internship program, where we help students find internships, complete ILAs, run internship preparation workshops and reflection groups, and collect evaluations. What were weaknesses that you improved upon in this job? How did you improve upon them as a Student Assistant? This job has helped so much with time management, task organization, and even scheduling. I used to start one task then somehow end up on a new one, and then continue through that cycle without much structure. Working as a Student Assistant has helped me to create task lists and check everything off as I go, especially since a lot of the tasks are with students and employers so there is somewhat of a timeframe. What were experiences from your Student Assistant position that have set expectations for what you want to find in a work environment? I feel a lot more confident asking for help or career-related advice. I am also grateful to have had such great supervision in Career Development. So, as I searched for my own internship and eventually a career in Counseling Psychology, I certainly asked a lot about supervision styles and what that relationship looks like. It is so important to have a supervisor that gives feedback but also allows space for growth. It is very important to me to have a strong support system and that is something that I feel like Career Development excels with, so now I always search for a similar environment. Explain the skills that you learned from this position, and how will you apply them in the future. I learned so many great skills in Career Development! Now I go into meetings and appointments with notes and questions prepared ahead of time, I make to-do lists, and organize any documents by putting them in appropriate folders so nothing is out of place. Another skill that I learned is to simply ask more questions. If you are uncertain about something, ask about it, do your research, and make sure to explore your options. I also feel much more open to feedback and am always appreciative of being in environments that promote growth and learning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - From Student Assistant to Prepared Professionals - Describe yourself.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m an Environmental Science major, (she/they). I plan to pursue graduate school and start my professional career in a biological / ecological / environmental field. How did you discover this job position? I discovered the job on Handshake since I was looking for an on-campus job my freshman year. How long have you worked in this job position, and what were your main tasks? I’ve worked here since the fall of my freshman year, so like a year and a half. My main tasks have been approving job postings and employers on Handshake, assisting with and plan office sponsored events such as the job and networking mixer, collaborating with other student assistants on social media posts, scheduling appointments, managing the professional dress closet and reviewing resumes. What were weaknesses that you improved that you improved upon during your time as a Student Assistant? I gained email, phone, and interview confidence as I answered more phone calls, emails, or performed mic interviews with professional staff. Also, I improved my planning/ time management and communication skills. I balanced work, school, and my personal life, which involved coming in on time and communicating with my supervisor when I was unable to come in. What were experiences from your Student Assistant position that have set expectations for what you want to find in a work environment? After working as a student assistant, it created expectations of finding inclusion and diversity and receiving constructive feedback from others in the workplace. Also, I wish to find supervisors that listen and consider my feedback. Explain the skills that you learned from this position, and how you will apply them in your future career. One skill that I learned from this position was event planning, which will be beneficial for planning events ahead of time in my future career. A major skill that I learned was communication. With my position, I learned to effectively communicate with my supervisors on a timely basis verbally or online (ie. text, email). Then, I learned to provide constructive feedback to other work colleagues. Through my tasks on Handshake and Excel for the dress closet, I learned software/ website management and organization. Interview skills were another skill I learned with this position. Besides knowing what to wear, I know what and how to say my interview answers (ie. how to make yourself look good based on skills and experiences). Finally, I am better equipped for job research. I not only know how and where to look for a job, but also I know my own worth.</image:caption>
