The Student Assistant team at the Office of Career Development has gained invaluable experiences that have significantly contributed to their career readiness. In a recent interview conducted by Olivia Harris, the Student Assistant for Student Outreach, she delves into how working in this dynamic environment has shaped her professional skills and growth. Through conversations with her fellow Student Assistants, Olivia provides unique insights into how their roles have helped them build critical abilities such as communication, leadership, and problem-solving—skills that are essential as they prepare for their future careers.

Hannah Fischer, Student Assistant for Employer Engagement, partnered with Chatham Honors Program for Impromptu Interview this Fall 2024 semester. Many of the students in the honors program are pursuing humanities-focused majors, which helped decide which employers to invite to Impromptu Interview. This year the office had the privilege of welcoming Terra Teets and Lisa Morse with Literacy Pittsburgh, and Erin Pace with Artists Image Resource (AIR) to campus.

Joshua Ziegler, better known around the office as ‘Josh’, graduated from the Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Arts in Student Affairs in Higher Education.  At Slippery Rock University, he received two awards, the Swope Citizenship Award, and The Baton, both recognizing his outstanding leadership skills. We are excited for Josh to bring his skills and personality to this office! 

This report examines the key strengths of interns based on assessments by their employers, with a particular emphasis on employers who were engaging with Chatham students for the first time. Impressively, 79 out of 86 first-time employers indicated their interest in hosting another intern from the school in the future, indicating a high satisfaction level with the interns' work.

Internships offer invaluable opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience and develop professional skills. Internships also help a student decide if the field or industry is what they would like to continue to pursue. Three students, Alyssa, Maddie, and Hannah, shared their internship experiences and highlighted the lessons they learned and the impact on their future careers.

After an internship's completion, supervisors at the internship site and students receive a final assessment survey. This survey report examines the site supervisor's answers to two specific questions. The first question is whether the organization would consider hiring another Chatham student, and the second question is whether they have any feedback or suggestions regarding the quality of Chatham's Internship Program. In addition, the report also looks into the responses of the students regarding what they gained from the internship.

On Wednesday, March 27th Dress for Success Pittsburgh arrived at Chatham with a free boutique of professional clothing. Students rushed to the Welker Room in James Laughlin Music Hall to get suited for success.

Chatham University interns are impressing employers with their remarkable strengths and abilities. Mercy Nyoni, the Graduate Associate for the Internship Program, oversees the current 74 students completing an internship this spring semester. Mercy completed the Spring 2024 Mid-term Evaluation Report that highlights the outstanding performance of these students during their internships.

Mental health maintenance is a topic that college students know all too well. Our faculty members acknowledged this topic as they advanced in their professional journeys. To learn their advice about mental health care, listen to the stories from our three professors: Dr. Erin Williams-Hatala, the Program Coordinator for the Biological Sciences and the Associate Professor for Biology; Dr. Christine Sarteschi, the Professor of Social Work and Criminology; and Professor Sara Bauknecht, the Assistant Professor in Communications.

On Wednesday, September 27th, the Office of Career Development hosted another successful Job and Internship Networking Mixer, with 147 students and 39 employers attending.

Only 4% of the Hispanic-Latinx community occupy senior positions in the corporate world. To increase their representation, there are three tips that corporations should utilize: mentorship programs, leadership programs, and education programs.

We interviewed two employers from the Spring 2023 Job and Internship Networking Mixer, Sara Marlovits from Northwestern Mutual and Dan Synde from Heritage Valley Healthcare System. Also, we interviewed one employer from the recent Fall 2023 Job and Internship Networking Mixer, Valetta Mays. These employers gave an insight into the mixer event, views about students, and advice for them as well.
